Geographical indications can be distinctive of the Italian tourist offer, which has an estimated food and wine tourism value of 40 billion Euros.

PDO Tourism is therefore a new frontier of food and wine tourism. A model that focuses on Geographical Indications as tools to generate authentic, educational, and sustainable experiences. The potential was photographed for the first time in a dedicated Report carried out by Qualivita Foundation in collaboration with Origin Italia and with the support of Masaf.

The analysis underlying the Report involved the protection consortia with the refcrenec products that are the basis of an offer that involves 103 roads and itineraries, 17 UNESCO sites, 29 historic rural landscapes, and 82 parks and protected areas.

Within these places, 20 indicators were detected as sources of PDO tourism. The Events are the most dynamic area of PDO tourism among these indicators. There were 235 of them in 2024, with such consolidated initiatives as ‘Open Daíries’, or guided tastings in cellars, together with new proposals, such as cultural festivals and sporting events linked to PDO and PGI products and their territories.
